About me – Dillan Burkhardt

Aspiring English Educator

I am a pre-service teacher with a passion for English literature and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, engaging learning environment. Currently completing my student teaching in English at UNLV, I bring my enthusiasm for classic literature, diverse professional experience, and adaptability to the classroom.
Educational Philosophy
I believe that literature provides students with windows into diverse experiences and mirrors that reflect their own lives. My classroom is built on the understanding that each student brings unique perspectives, and through collaborative learning, critical thinking, and creative expression, all students can develop the skills they need to succeed. I strive to create a structured yet nurturing environment where students can safely explore complex ideas and challenging texts.
Academic Background

I am pursuing my teaching credential at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where I’ve developed a strong foundation in both English content knowledge and pedagogical practices. My coursework has focused on curriculum development, classroom management strategies, and inclusive teaching methods. My deep appreciation for classic literature, particularly the works of Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare, informs my approach to teaching and textual analysis.
Professional Journey
Before entering the field of education, I worked as an Open Water Scuba Instructor for three years. This experience honed my instructional skills in a unique environment that required clear communication, patient guidance, and the ability to ensure safety while facilitating learning. The skills I developed teaching diving—breaking complex concepts into manageable steps, adapting to different learning styles, and cultivating confidence in learners—have proved invaluable in the English classroom.
Teaching Experience

My student teaching journey has been shaped by two influential mentors:
At Sierra Vista High School, I worked with Tonya Knight, who modeled a structured yet compassionate teaching approach. Under her guidance, I learned how to establish clear expectations while building positive relationships with students. This balance of firmness and care has become central to my teaching philosophy.
Currently, I work with David Jurvelin, who has provided invaluable insights into the practical realities of the teaching profession. Through his mentorship, I’ve gained understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities that extend beyond classroom instruction, from administrative tasks to professional collaboration.
During these placements, I’ve developed and implemented lesson plans for works including The Tragedy of Macbeth, Beowulf, and creative writing units, with a focus on making complex literature accessible and relevant to modern students. My teaching approach incorporates various engagement strategies, including interactive discussions, multi-modal learning activities, and technology integration.

My background in scuba instruction has given me a unique perspective on experiential learning that I bring to my English classroom.
